Abel has a medical doctorate degree from Jimma University, in Ethiopia, and masters of Science in public health from LSHTM. He has worked as a General Practitioner in Ethiopia, and has lectured on public health and human physiology at Jimma University and the Defence University Health Science College. He worked as a nutritionist with Save the Children (US) in Ethiopia in 2003-2004. Since 2005 Abel has worked for Valid International, first as a Country Manager and Community Therapeutic Care Advisor in Ethiopia, and since 2008 as the Principal Research Officer and Valid's in-country Technical Advisor in Zambia. Abel is an expert in maternal and child health and nutrition.
