Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA)

donor

The Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA) is the federal agency charged with planning and implementing most of Canada's development cooperation program in order to reduce poverty and to contribute to a more secure, equitable and prosperous world.

PSI’s CIDA Grants

Child survival is a priority for CIDA. Since malaria is the leading cause of death in African children under five, Canada has responded accordingly. Canada has been the largest single country donor in the distribution of free long-lasting bed nets to poor and disadvantaged children under five and pregnant women from 2002 to 2007.

The CIDA-funded PSI Community Impact Program is a large-scale, multi-country initiative to increase access to life-saving interventions for children under five by providing diagnosis and treatment free-of-charge in communities where no health facility is present. This program includes a series of Home Management of Malaria (HMM) / Community Case Management pilot programs in four African countries, combined with rigorous monitoring and evaluation (M&E) activities to evaluate outcomes and impact on child mortality.

By funding this program, CIDA is not only supporting immediate and substantial health impact in the target countries, it will also serve as a catalyst to attract further external funding (e.g. GFATM, MCHIP and PMI) for scale-up and expansion in other countries. Overall, the program provides unique additional support to the global effort to increase access to effective treatment of childhood illnesses for vulnerable groups.
