The Department for International Development (DFID) manages the UK's aid to poor countries and works to get rid of extreme poverty. In 2003, DFID published an internal review of the DFID approach to social marketing which concluded that: "Social marketing (SM) represents an extremely valuable tool to induce behaviour change of public health significance, and to improve access to health goods and services. There are important and valuable complementarities and synergies between SM and other DFID support to the health sector, especially the mainstay efforts to strengthen the public sector health provision."
DFID has long been considered a central partner to PSI, providing extensive support to increase health impact and expand access to products and services. DFID will provide an estimated ten percent of PSI’s 2010 revenue, making the UK PSI’s second largest bilateral public donor.
Support from DFID has been essential to the success and growth of the Society for Family Health (SFH), PSI’s affiliate in Nigeria. SFH is currently the largest provider of contraceptive products in Nigeria, and they have recently received funding from DFID to expand HIV and malaria programs.
DFID has also provided funding to procure long lasting insecticide treated nets (LLINs), grants to increase local net manufacturing capacity and programs to increase the use of LLINs and anti-malarial treatments throughout Africa.
In the Mekong region of China, Laos, Vietnam, Thailand and Myanmar, DFID has supported a project to provide a full-range of harm reduction services for drug users, and AIDS prevention social marketing and behavior change communications to sex workers, their clients and MSM populations. Services included voluntary counseling, outreach and referral services for HIV pre- and post-test counseling and anonymous test referrals. PSI aimed to develop a network of high quality service providers that were considered accessible to target populations.
