The Federal Republic of Germany through KfW Entwicklungsbank (the German development bank)

donor

On behalf of the German federal government KfW Entwicklungsbank finances investments and advisory services in developing countries. It typically works with governmental institutions in the respective countries. Its aim is to build up and expand a social and economic infrastructure and to create efficient financial institutions while protecting resources and ensuring a healthy environment.

PSI’s KfW Grants

KfW first provided support to PSI in 1993, and it has consistently contributed to PSI’s health impact ever since. PSI has received funding from KfW across all of its major health areas and in every region where PSI works. For example, support from KfW has enabled PSI to create innovative strategies to spread HIV prevention messages among vulnerable populations in the Caribbean, provide contraceptives to women in Cambodia and promote safe water systems in Guinea.

In 2007, PSI received funding from KfW to begin airing campaigns addressing female genital mutilation (FGM) in Mali. More than 85% of women in Mali undergo FGM, and no law exists to prohibit the practice. With support from KfW, PSI/Mali and the Malian government are collaborating against FGM with mass media campaigns that dispel myths and address cultural pressures and expectations.

KfW has also been central to PSI’s efforts to reduce STI and HIV incidence in Latin America and the Caribbean. These efforts have focused on increasing safer sexual practices among youth, commercial sex workers, men who have sex with men and rural populations. Condom social marketing programs in the region have also promoted condom use and improved markets, increasing the availability of safe and affordable products.
