Dr. Rehana Ahmed

Dr. Rehana Ahmed’s career has focused on maternal and child health, with a concentration in reproductive health and family planning.

After completing training as a medical doctor in Pakistan and the UK, Dr. Rehana managed an International Planned Parenthood Fund-funded clinic in Pakistan. Her major achievement was the conversion of the clinic into a center of excellence that became well known for both high quality of care and training of health professionals. This experience proved useful throughout her association with PSI.

Social Marketing Pakistan, the NGO foundedby PSI, was operating a successful, nationwide condom marketing program. In 1995, when it received a substantial grant from the German government to increase the use of IUDs, the PSI country representative asked Dr. Rehana to join the project and lead the development of clinical services. Her achievements included the following:

• Provider Training: Starting up and managing a nationwide Training Unit that enrolled over 12,000 service providers in five years. The network was branded Greenstar and became so well-known that it led to a change of the company name to Greenstar Social Marketing.

• Fundraising: After promotion to chief executive officer of Greenstar in 2001, Dr. Rehana managed fund raising development that resulted in total awards of $41 million from USAID, UNFPA and DFID over a five-year period. Greenstar also received $7 million from USAID for collaboration with John Snow International plus smaller grants from the Packard Foundation.

• Strategic Planning and Policy Formation: During her three years as CEO Dr. Rehana worked with PSI to develop Greenstar policies and strategies. She remains an elected member of the Greenstar Board of Directors.

In 2004 Dr. Rehana relocated to Kenya and became a freelance health consultant in maternal and child health and family planning. She has kept busy with assignments from KfW, USAID and international NGOs. Currently she is the reproductive health specialist for the UN Millennium Project for East and Southern Africa with funding from the Packard Foundation. She was elected to PSI’s board of director’s in 2006.
