Prior to joining PSI, Chiwawa served as Project Coordinator for Malawi College of Medicine/Johns Hopkins Project for nine years. She coordinated Microbicide studies in collaboration with Microbicide Trials Network (MTN) and PMTCT studies. She has a MSc degree in Epidemiology from University of Malawi, Chancellor College. As a Fogarty trainee, Chiwawa earned an MPH from Johns Hopkins School of Public Health with emphasis in Epidemiology and Biostatistics.
