The MDGs, adopted by world leaders from 189 countries at the United Nations in 2000, are ambitious targets for improving life in the developing world by 2015 and, ultimately, for ending poverty. For a full description of all the goals, please visit the UN website.
Goal 4: Reduce Child Mortality
Global Situation:
Deaths in children under 5 have declined steadily worldwide. Around 9 million young children die each year from largely preventable or treatable causes.
Targets to Reach:
Reduce by two-thirds, between 1990 and 2015, the under-5 mortality rate.
PSI's Contribution, 1990-2010:
PSI has averted 27,755,249 diarrhea cases, 6,088 pneumonia cases (since 2008) and 75,638 deaths
(from diarrhea, nutrition and pneumonia).
Goal 5: Improve Maternal Health
Global Situation:
- Every year, 536,000 women and girls die as a result of complications during pregnancy, childbirth or the six weeks following delivery.
- One in every four women who is married or in a union has an unmet need for family planning, a figure that has remained almost unchanged since 1995.
Targets to Reach:
Achieve universal access to reproductive health.
PSI's Contribution, 1990-2010:
- PSI has averted 123,522 maternal deaths.
- PSI has averted 24,476,349 unintended pregnancies and provided 105,408,278 couple years of protection (CYP).
Goal 6: Combat HIV/AIDS, Malaria & Other Diseases
Global Situation:
- Worldwide, the number of people newly infected with HIV peaked in 1996 and has since declined, to 2.7 million in 2007.
- Nearly 1 million people still die each year from malaria.
- In 2007, there were 13.7 million cases of tuberculosis (TB) globally.
Targets to Reach:
Have halted and begun to reverse the spread of HIV/AIDS and the incidence of malaria and other major diseases.
PSI's Contribution, 1990-2010:
- PSI has averted 1,003,810 HIV cases.
- PSI has averted 131,314,638 malaria cases and 1,009,053 malaria deaths.
- PSI has averted 12,286 TB deaths (since 2004).
