PSI/Paraguay was established in 1996. Its programs target low-income populations, especially adolescents and young adults.
PSI/Paraguay estimates that in 2015, its products and services helped avert 18,381 DALYs, including, by health area:
- 13,675 HIV DALYs
- 4,594 FP DALYs
- 111 Nurtion DALYs
PSI/Paraguay’s family planning programs also provided 84,903 couple-years protection.
PSI launched Pantera condoms in 1998 and revolutionized condom marketing in Paraguay by introducing them in non-traditional channels and, for the first time, using mass media advertising and promoting health by peer educators through “face to face” workshops at schools and producing TV and radio shows . Since then, almost 40 million Pantera condoms have been sold.
PSI Paraguay launched an oral contraceptive pill called Segura in 2001 and an emergency contraceptive called Pronta in February 2004. Segura sales are above target and, in an agreement with the Ministry of Health and CAFAPAR (Paraguayan Pharmacies Network), thousands of health providers and pharmacists have been trained with information on oral contraceptives and other modern methods of contraception. In 2014, PSI Paraguay launched Segura Plus, an extension of Segura. Together, in 2017 they reached 48% of the market share among a growing marketplace. Pronta has the leading emergency contraception market share by volume, selling about 250,000 units per year.
Maternal and Child Health
The multivitamin VitalDía was launched in November 2000, and is leading the market with 28% of the market share growing steadily from 2012 to 2015 but realized sharp sales declines in 2016; steadying again in 2017. Its components include folic acid, recommended for women, to prevent infant deformities.
Each year, workshops are organized and directed towards adolescents and youth, as well as their teachers and parents, at educational and sport institutions. These workshops focus on sexual and reproductive health education, including issues such as sexual violence, gender based violence, discrimination based on sexual identity or orientation, family planning, and sexually transmitted infections and HIV/AIDS. At least 6,200 beneficiaries are reached each year and PSI Paraguay commits itself to supporting this outreach.
PSI Paraguay Sociedad Anónima(S.A.) generates enough positive margins annually to assess new gaps in the market and ways in PSI Paraguay can continue to benefit the community in areas of significant health needs. The brands Segura, Segura Plus, Pronta and VitalDía are leaders in their respective markets. Similarly, Pantera is well positioned within the condom market. Capitalizing on its success, PSI Paraguay S.A. transitioned in 2003 from a donor-funded social marketing program into a financially independent, profitable social enterprise that continually looks for ways to support a socially minded marketplace.
