WASHINGTON, DC, Feb. 14, 2003 — PSI produced 17.2 million Person Years of Protection (PYPs) in 2002, according to the December 2002 PSI sales report, exceeding the target of 15.9 million. This represents a 31% increase over 2001 PYPs of 13 million (PYPs is a formula developed by PSI which combines several indices of protection into one generic unit estimating the person years of protection PSI provides through sales of its products and services). In 2002, Couple Years of Protection (CYPs) accounted for 57% of PSI PYPs, down from 62% in 2001 (a total of 9.85 million CYPs). Person Years of Malaria Protection (PYMPs) produced 25% of PYPs, up from 15% in 2002. Children Years of Rehydration (CYRHs) generated 12% of 2002 PYPs, slightly down from 15% in 2001. PYP growth was driven largely by PYMPs, which increased 123% from 2001 to 2002. Women of Reproductive Age Years of Supplementation were up 51%, CYPs were up 20% and CYRHs were up 3%. Person Years of Treated Water (PYTW) was the only indice that decreased from 2001, by 7%. Thirty-seven percent of all PYPs were produced in Eastern and Southern Africa, 23% in Asia, 19% in West and Central Africa, 15% in Other Africa (Morocco, Namibia, Nigeria and Uganda), 5% in the Americas and 1% in Europe/Eurasia. Two more countries joined Zimbabwe (2.155) with condom sales per capita of two or more: Haiti (2.147) and Togo (2.012). This is a level that had never been achieved prior to November 2002. Another 11 countries achieved sales per capita of one or more in 2002: Cote d'Ivoire (1.79), Botswana (1.45), Cambodia (1.41), CAR (1.35), Benin (1.30), Burkina Faso (1.29), Cameroon (1.11), Zambia (1.08), Eritrea (1.054), and Nigeria (1.045) and Guinea (1.01).
