PSI Boosts Contraceptive, Malarial Protection in 2001 PSI significantly increased the amount of contraceptive and malarial protection it provided to the world’s poor in 2001, according to 2001 end-of-year sales figures compiled by PSI. Those sales figures show that sales of contraceptive products through PSI affiliates produced 8.2 million “couple years of protection,” an increase of 26% over 2000. A “couple year of protection” is the amount of contraceptive protection a couple needs to protect them for one year. If the CYPs of Brazil and Ethiopia (two countries that PSI does not manage but supports financially) are included, the total CYPs for 2001 would reach 9.5 million. Sales of over 750,000 treated mosquito nets and over 650,000 insecticide treatment kits produced 1.9 million “person years of malaria protection,” an increase of 114% over 2000. In addition, several PSI Africa programs reached major milestones in cumulative condom sales: Nigeria reached sales of 500 million condoms in 12 years of existence, only the fourth PSI program to reach that level. Cameroon reached 100 million after 13 years and Tanzania reached 100 million after 9 years. 2001 contraceptive sales increased over 2000 for male condoms (22%), oral contraceptive pills (21%), emergency contraception (327%), injectable contraception (89%), female condoms (44%), and IUDs (3%). The total CYPs produced by PSI were broken down in the following way: male and female condoms, 72%; oral contraceptive pills, 15%; injectable contraception, 6.5%; IUDs, 6%; and others, 0.5%. The geographic shares of total CYPs by region were West and Central Africa (including Nigeria), 32%; Asia, 30%; Eastern and Southern Africa, 23%; Latin America and the Caribbean, 13%; and Europe and Eurasia, 1%. Other products also increased their 2001 sales over 2000, including multivitamins, 426%; voluntary counseling and HIV testing (measured as numbers of clients seen), 304%; insecticide-treated nets, 106%; insecticide retreatment, 62%; and oral rehydration salts, 13%. —David J.
