KATHMANDU, Nepal, Feb. 20, 2004 — In order to reach the many Nepalese who live beyond the scope of regular mass media HIV/AIDS prevention campaigns, PSI/Nepal has launched an innovative postal sticker campaign which will expose those in remote areas, who are often unable to access newspapers, television and radios, to lifesaving prevention messages. The Number One postal sticker campaign will place a sticker bearing an HIV/AIDS prevention message on every piece of domestic and international postal mail in Nepal for approximately six months. Reaching out to those inaccessible areas where risk of HIV infection is even more prevalent than in urban areas was a challenge for PSI/Nepal, until now. The black stickers have the Number One logo and the message "Protect yourself and others from HIV/AIDS." PSI/Nepal County Representative Steven W. Honeyman believes that the campaign is the first of its kind in the world and if successful, may set a trend for other less developed countries facing similar challenges of lack of resources and increasing health risks. The U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) along with local government and nongovernmental organizations (NGOs) have joined hands with PSI/Nepal to make this campaign a success. The sticker effort received a warm welcome and support from His Majesty's Government of Nepal and local NGOs. USAID Mission Director to Nepal Donald Clark said, "Any effective response needs multi-sector approaches and this is a fine example of public-private collaboration." The campaign marks a new era in the history of HIV/AIDS prevention in Nepal. For the first time, the public sector, the private sector and social organizations have come together for a social cause. — Vivek Raj, PSI/Nepal
