Uzbekistan: “Edu-tainment” Improves HIV Awareness to Support Governmental “Year of Social Protection”

TASHKENT, Uzbekistan, June 22, 2007 — The President of Uzbekistan dubbed 2007 as the Year of Social Protection, and PSI/Uzbekistan, with more than 50 staff and over 100 volunteers, is actively supporting this government-driven effort to improve the health and welfare of the people of Uzbekistan.

Work began in November 2006 when PSI partnered with the Social Initiatives Support Fund, a local NGO founded to support local initiatives in the areas of healthcare, education, social support, social infrastructure and environment. PSI and SISF pooled their resources to plan out a series of public youth-oriented “edu-tainment” events targeting vulnerable youth in Uzbekistan, all under a project entitled “HIV/AIDS and Drug Use Prevention for Youth.” The joint SISF/PSI actions to educate youth about HIV prevention represent a strong civil society response to the government’s call for improved social protection in Uzbekistan.
