2002 Sales Meet PSI Objectives

WASHINGTON, DC, July 25, 2002 — PSI is on track to meet its 2002 objective of producing 9.2 million couple years of protection (CYPs). Worldwide condom sales did not quite reach the target of 50% but all other contraceptive product sales were above target — sometimes far above target. In the first six months of 2002, PSI country programs have produced an annualized 9.3 million CYPs. This is 13% ahead of last year's CYP total of 8.2 million.

A CYP is the amount of contraception it takes to protect one couple for one year.

PSI estimates that sales of its products and services in the first semester averted 232,801 primary cases and 402,746 secondary cases of HIV. Primary cases are the estimated number of HIV infections prevented as a direct result of program activity; secondary cases are the estimated number of future HIV infections prevented during the subsequent 12-month period as a result of program activity. This is a 22% increase over the same period in 2001.

Annualized person years of malaria protection (PYMPs) in the first semester were 3.4 million — 77% ahead of last year's total of 1.9 million.

In terms of performance against sales targets, the most impressive achievements were in emergency contraception, female condoms and insecticide-treated net retreatment - all products where worldwide sales exceeded 90% of the annual sales target in the first six months. Good results were also shown in intrauterine devices (87% of the annual target), injectables (57%), oral rehydration salts (51%) and oral contraceptives (51%). Note: Products selling at 50% or above are performing at or above target; products below 50% are below target.

Products performing under target include male condoms (46%), voluntary counseling and testing (VCT)(46%), insecticide-treated nets (45%) and multivitamins (36%).

It should be noted that performance against target is only one way of evaluating how well a social marketing program is doing. A country not achieving its target might have good sales but set its sales target unrealistically high; a country selling far in excess of its target may have an unambitious goal.

Despite the fact that worldwide male condom sales are performing slightly under target (46%), five new countries have joined the group of countries that sold above one condom per capita in the first half of 2002 - Central African Republic (1.35), Eritrea (1.10), Guinea (1.07), Cameroon (1.06) and Nigeria (1.03).

Other countries selling in excess of one condom per capita include Togo (1.76), Haiti (1.73), Zimbabwe (1.65), Cote d'Ivoire (1.61), Botswana (1.44), Cambodia (1.37), Burkina Faso (1.37) and Bénin (1.25).

Georgia, Tanzania, Central African Republic, Bénin and Rwanda all had first semester condom sales in excess of 60% of their annual sales targets.

The sales leaders in other product types were as follows:

Oral contraceptives: In terms of sales per capita, the leaders, in order of performance, are Zimbabwe (with three brands), Cambodia, Venezuela, Guinea and Bolivia. Best performances against annual targets are Guinea (273%), Kenya (117%) and Zimbabwe (96%).

Injectables: The leaders in sales per capita are Uganda, Bolivia, Guinea, Haiti and Madagascar. Best performance against target is Guinea (176%), Zimbabwe (73%), Bolivia (70%) and Kenya (64%).

ITNs: The sales per capita leaders are Kenya, Malawi, Namibia and Bénin. Best performance against target is Tanzania (82%), Kenya (78%), Bénin (73%) and Zambia (69%).

VCT: The leaders in counseling and testing sessions per capita were Botswana and Zimbabwe. All programs for which data was available were performing slightly under target, in the 41-48% range.
