Ashley Judd Joins PSI Board

WASHINGTON, DC, December 10, 2004 — Actor and Activist Ashley Judd has joined the PSI board of directors after serving as global ambassador of PSI's YouthAIDS project for almost two years and visiting PSI HIV/AIDS prevention programs in Cambodia and Thailand in July 2004.

"One of the biggest lessons learned from my trip with YouthAIDS is that our programs work," said. Judd. "They are proof that something that can be done to prevent the infection of 15- to 24-year-olds. There is no vaccine, there is no cure, there is only prevention to stave off untold suffering, misery and loss of our brothers and sisters around the world and the destruction of our planet. I am pleased to join the board of PSI to help advance its mission of enabling low-income and vulnerable people such as girls and women to change their behavior and protect their health."

Judd became YouthAIDS Global Ambassador in January 2003 and advocates that educating young people is key to stopping the spread of this devastating disease. In collaboration with YouthAIDS, Judd has participated in public service announcements and charitable events for HIV/AIDS. By calling attention to HIV/AIDS, Judd's efforts have raised awareness and funding for the PSI's YouthAIDS initiative and PSI programs around the world.

In July 2004, Judd traveled with YouthAIDS to PSI programs in Cambodia and Thailand to increase awareness of the HIV/AIDS pandemic in Asia. The trip included visits to clinics and schools, opportunities where she spoke with youth one-on-one about HIV/AIDS, and participation at the 2004 International AIDS Conference in Bangkok. In 2005, Judd will travel with YouthAIDS to visit PSI programs in Africa.

Judd is a well-established actor who has appeared in such films as Double Jeopardy, Kiss the Girls, Frida, Divine Secrets of the Ya Ya Sisterhood, Where the Heart Is, A Time to Kill, Heat, Ruby in Paradise and most recently Twisted and De-Lovely. She has worked with such actors as Morgan Freeman, Robert DeNiro, Selma Hayek, Harvey Kietel, Sandra Bullock, Andy Garcia and Kevin Kline.
