PSI is poised to exceed easily its target of 15.9 million Person Years of Protection (PYP) in 2002, according to the November sales report. Annualized 2002 PYP stand at 17 million, as of the end of November. PSI is expected to surpass all targets for its various indices of health impact with the possible exception of Children Years of Rehydration (CYRH) and Women of Reproductive Age Years of Supplementation (WRAYS) where PSI is currently performing a little under target. Here is the lowdown of PSI's current standing with sales as of October 2002 by type of health impact measured:
Zimbabwe has just become the first PSI country to achieve 2.0 in annualized condom sales per capita (2.05). Other countries selling in excess of 1.0 condoms per capita include: Togo (1.94), Cote d'Ivoire (1.74), Haiti (1.73), Botswana (1.56), CAR (1.35), Benin (1.34), Burkina Faso (1.30), Cambodia (1.09), Cameroon (1.08), Eritrea (1.06), Guinea (1.02) and Nigeria (1.02). Top countries in per capita sales of cycles of oral contraceptives include Cambodia (.110), Venezuela (.083), Guinea (.069), Bolivia (.058) and Zambia (.048). Top countries in per capita sales of insecticide-treated nets are Malawi (.045), Kenya (0.19), Zambia (.013), Benin (.010) and Rwanda (.008). Countries averting the most pregnancies (based on the methodology outlined in Phil Harvey's book "Let Every Child Be Wanted") are Nigeria (1,071,292), Pakistan (829,261), India (702,419), Côte d'Ivoire (182,441), Cambodia (156,470), Zambia (146,024), Uganda (139,243), Kenya (119,722), Zimbabwe (115,056). Countries averting the most primary cases of HIV/AIDS (according to a formula developed by AIDSMark) include Nigeria (102,911), Zimbabwe (46,590), Cote d'Ivoire (46,470), Tanzania (35,193), South Africa (32,330) and Zambia (26,176). Countries averting the most episodes of malaria include Kenya (7.4 million), Malawi (4.6), Tanzania (3.2), Zambia (2.0) and Mozambique (1.7).
