Basic HIV Care and Prevention Package

The Basic HIV care and prevention package (BCP) is an easy-to-use, patient-managed system that includes HIV prevention, care and treatment products and information for people living with HIV (PLHA). Each package contains two insecticide treated mosquito nets, a water vessel, sodium hypochlorite (dilute bleach) solution to treat drinking water, a filter cloth for water, and condoms. The BCP also includes information on how family members can access HIV counseling and testing services and use of opportunistic infection prophylaxis. PSI complements distribution with an information campaign targeted at HIV service providers and clients.

PSI collaborates with various partners to distribute BCPs including: PLHA groups and health facilities in Uganda, Kenya, Nigeria and Sudan; an international NGO in Ethiopia; and rural community-based organizations and the military in Cote d'Ivoire.

PSI's safe drinking water programs in Mozambique, Zambia and Malawi provide point-of-use water treatment products to PLHA. Drinking water free of microbial contaminants is important to PLHA, who are particularly susceptible to opportunistic infections such as diarrheal disease. This low-added-cost intervention helps ensure that PLHA are able to maintain optimal health and a high quality of life.
