Sterile Injecting Equipment

About 1 out of every 3 new HIV infections outside sub Saharan Africa is linked to to injecting drug use. Distribution of sterile injecting equipment - or Needle and Syringe Programs (NSP) - is one of the main methods to prevent the spread of HIV among people who inject drugs. NSP is a critical component of the WHO’s Comprehensive Package for Prevention, Care and Treatment of People who Inject Drugs.

In countries as diverse as India, Vietnam, and Thailand, PSI programs provide people who use drugs with access to sterile injecting equipment. PSI delivers these programs as part of a spectrum of services designed to prevent initiation of injecting drug use, reduce the risk of HIV transmission for those already injecting, and facilitate access to drug treatment and substution therapy for those ready to reduce or quit their drug use.
