PSI and Gender Issues

As a leader in health communication and product promotion, PSI promotes gender-sensitive interventions that achieve measurable health impact. PSI recognizes the critical link between gender-awareness, gender-equity and health improvement, PSI has integrated gender throughout its health interventions globally. As such, PSI has comprehensive, evidence-based strategies addressing gender into many of its health interventions in over 60 countries.

Innovations in Gender Programming

PSI’s gender programming is both innovative and comprehensive. Country programs focus on engaging both men and women in gender equitable discussions around all aspects of health improvement and promotion. These gender strategies include programs in:
Engaging men
Empowering at-risk populations to prevent HIV infection
Discouraging cross-generational sex
Integrating family planning with HIV prevention

The Future of PSI’s Gender Programming

Working to End FGM in Mali
In 2006 PSI/Mali began its fight against female genital mutilation (FGM). PSI/Mali, in collaboration with the National Committee on the Abandonment of FGM and through a partnership with the Ministry for the Promotion of Women, Children and Family, provides communication and research with the goal of reducing the practice of FGM in Mali. PSI/Mali has developed TV and radio spots promoting alternatives to FGM. For more detail, see news story:
