Maternal Health
The Problem
An estimated 43% of women in developing countries are vulnerable
to anemia due to iron deficiency. |
The Response
Micronutrient supplements containing iron. |
The PSI Contribution
In 2005, PSI helped over 154,000 women supplement their diets
to prevent iron deficiency anemia. |
Micronutrient deficiencies are impairing the socio-economic development
of many countries. They have an immense impact on the health,
learning ability and productivity of a population. These deficiencies
contribute to a vicious cycle of malnutrition, underdevelopment,
and poverty affecting already vulnerable groups. Without supplements
and tools to improve hygiene, women are at increased risk of disease.
Child Survival
The Problem
Thousands of children die every day from disease and malnutrition. |
The Response
Micronutrient supplements, Safe Water and Oral Rehydration
Salts. |
The PSI Contribution
In 2004, PSI averted 12 million cases of diarrhea and saved
the lives of 36,000 children through its safe water programs
alone |
Children are consuming lower than recommended amounts of important
micronutrients resulting in maternal deaths, impaired physical
and mental development, increased susceptibility to disease and
lowered productivity. PSI believes that solving micronutrient
malnutrition is an important step in protecting populations and
is working to reduce the health and social costs of micronutrient
deficiencies through the social marketing of vitamin supplements
and other products currently in development.
Safe Water
5,000 children die every day from diarrhea
diseases, mostly due to contaminated water. For child survival
and diarrhea prevention PSI's products include safe water solution
and tablets, and PuR Purifier of Water; for diarrhea treatment,
oral rehydration salts.
