We promote the use of oral rehydration salts (ORS) and zinc for the management of diarrhea cases.
In May 2004, the World Health Organization and UNICEF issued a joint statement recommending the use of zinc with ORS as the best way to decrease the incidence, severity and recurrence of diarrheal disease in children.
Our diarrheal disease treatment programs identify the most significant factors that influence diarrhea treatment-seeking behavior among caregivers to develop communications and product distribution strategies that respond to their needs and preferences.
Where feasible, we promote diarrhea treatment kits with a pre-packaged combination of ORS and zinc.
We promote the benefits of diarrhea treatment, educate caregivers and health providers on why ORS and zinc are the most effective ways to manage acute diarrhea, and ensure availability of these life-saving products through private- and public-sector channels.
Making a Difference
Diarrhea is one of the leading causes of morbidity and mortality among children under five in Guinea. PSI/Guinea took an essential step in the fight against diarrhea by launching OraselZinc®, financed by the German government through KfW Entwicklungsbank (KfW Development Bank). In collaboration with the Ministry of Health, PSI/Guinea distributed more than 300,000 OraselZinc® kits through commercial, pharmaceutical and public channels, which prevented 13,912 years of healthy life from being lost to morbidity and mortality due to diarrhea.
