PSI’s headquarters in Washington, DC has made contact with PSI staff in Haiti. About 20 of the 100 PSI/Haiti employees, who were in Port-au-Prince when the earthquake hit, are confirmed to be safe. However, they have relayed urgent messages that supplies of food and water are running critically low.
PSI/Haiti Country Director Alison Malmqvist said her biggest concern now is getting water and food to staff who survived the earthquake. She said her team on the ground has reported that they only have enough water to last two days.
PSI has deployed a special response team to the region to further assess the situation and help reinforce relief efforts on the ground, particularly to ensure the ongoing supply of safe drinking water in the country. Malmqvist is leading PSI’s special response team from PSI’s office in the region. The special response team is also tasked with locating PSI/Haiti staff members who remain missing.
PSI has launched an appeal for funds to help support these efforts. A donation of just 50 cents can provide a family of four in Haiti with safe drinking water for a month. To donate, click here.
PSI will update this page with more information as it becomes available.
