PSI/Europe
Population Services International/Europe (PSI/Europe) is a non-governmental
organisation (NGO) that uses education to motivate healthy behaviour
change by engaging the resources and techniques of both the commercial
and non-profit sector. Our core method of social marketing uses culturally
relevant mass media advertising and information, education and communication
(IEC) campaigns to empower individuals to make informed choices that
encourage their well-being, as well as ensuring access to products and
services to support this behaviour. PSI/Europe prioritises the participation
and empowerment of stakeholders at all stages of its interventions,
and promotes acknowledgement of, and advocacy for, human rights as core
values that underpin all its work.
PSI/Europe is located in London and has a dedicated and effective staff
specialising in programme & financial management and marketing &
resource development. PSI/Europe's focal areas are family planning,
HIV/AIDS, STI prevention and management, sexual and reproductive rights,
malaria prevention and maternal and child health.
PSI/Europe’s principal activities are:
- Working with affiliate organisations and their partners in the strategic
identification and design of social marketing projects which address
the health needs of lower and middle-income people in less developed
countries. PSI/Europe also works to develop and nurture financial
support for these programmes, particularly within Europe.
- Representing PSI in Europe, among the European donor community,
international associations, European NGOs and academic bodies (see
examples below).
- Providing in-country technical assistance and capacity building,
as well as performing grant, financial and programme management functions
ensuring that grants received are properly managed and accounted for,
and that reporting requirements are met.
PSI/Europe currently manages funding for several international projects:
- A voluntary counseling and testing (VCT) programme in Namibia,
which incorporates an extensive and rapidly growing network of VCT
centres, as well as post support groups;
- a large-scale, multi-layered behaviour change communications initiative
among high-risk groups such as commercial sex workers (CSWs), their
clients, unemployed youth and other at-risk populations in Myanmar;
- a programme to empower low-income CSWs in Togo
to practice safer sex and to achieve improved reproductive health
through the use of female condoms;
- a human rights intervention in Central
America which focuses on the empowerment of marginalized groups,
such as men who have sex with men and CSWs;
- a project in collaboration with the Medical Research Council Microbicides
Programme, developing materials such as communications, packaging
and questionnaires for use within an upcoming pilot and phase 3 trials.
Future support will include marketing strategies for a microbicidal
product.
In addition to grant management of social marketing projects overseas,
PSI/Europe has undertaken consultancies for:
- the International Union for Health Promotion and Education
- the Joint United Nations Programme on HIV/AIDS (UNAIDS)
- the World Health Organisation (WHO)
- our colleague organization, Population Services International (PSI)
In undertaking its work, PSI/Europe collaborates with a variety of
stakeholders from medical associations, NGOs, community based groups,
special interest groups and individuals all of whom provide services
or information designed to improve both health status and health seeking
behaviour. Such partnerships ensure complimentarity of efforts, increased
impact, and consistent and appropriate communication of messages.
Examples of PSI/Europe representation on a technical and networking

- Steering Group of the UK Network on Sexual & Reproductive Health
Rights
- All-Party Parliamentary Group on AIDS
