Gender-Based Violence: A Review of the Evidence

download pdf »
  • Year: 2016

Gender-based violence (GBV) is violence directed at an individual based on his or her sex, gender identity or expression of socially defined norms of masculinity and femininity. Both men and women can experience GBV, but because rates among women are significantly greater, violence against women is the focus of this review. The review describes the prevalence and health effects of GBV among women and synthesizes the published evidence on the most effective ways of preventing it.
