Vietnam has a concentrated HIV/AIDS epidemic, with the highest rates of HIV prevalence among key populations including people who inject drugs (PWID) [13.4 per cent]. Multiple studies have highlighted the reduced risk of both HIV and Hepatitis C transmission with low dead-space syringes. In this context, PSI/Vietnam designed a pilot initiative to socially market low dead-space syringes (LDSS). The pilot facilitated distribution of LDSS through pharmacy and non-pharmacy outlets accessible to PWID; behavior change initiatives with pharmacists; and demand creation activities with PWID. The study presented the findings from an evaluation of the pilot after one year of activity in Hanoi and Thai Nguyen.
