HEALTH IMPACT

The Annual Health Impact Report is one of the ways PSI adheres to its corporate mission to measure bottom-line results. The charts and graphs below summarize the 2006 results of PSI's impact. The figures are expressed as DALYs (Disability Adjusted Life Years), which allow for comparisons across regions and health sectors, cases averted, market share, sales by channel, and number of products.

Cases Averted

PSI seeks to measure its performance to the extent practicable. In public health, where a multitude of factors determine health outcomes, performance metrics can be problematic. PSI uses a variety of models developed by public health experts to make realistic estimates of its impact. Here are some examples of PSI's estimated health impact from its social marketing projects in 2006:

PSI's Estimated Health Impact in 2006:
HIV/AIDS
    209,000 HIV infections averted
Malaria
    140,000 child malaria deaths averted
    27.9 million malaria episodes averted
Safe Water
2.2 million episodes of diarrhea averted
Family Planning
    6.7 million unintended pregnancies averted
Note: these estimates are based on sales and distribution figures and refer to health impact derived from products sold and distributed in 2006. Products with a useful lifetime of longer than one year (such as long-lasting insecticide-treated mosquito nets which can protect their users for up to five years) only "count" statistics-wise in the year in which they are sold/distributed.
