Swaziland

Swaziland is landlocked between South Africa and Mozambique. It’s predominantly rural and severely affected by HIV/AIDS, with prevalence of 26% for the general population and sexually active respectively and nearly 60% in some demographic segments. 1

PSI has been implementing health programs in Swaziland since 2001. Programs include HIV/AIDS testing and counselling (HTC), condom social marketing (CSM), male circumcision for HIV prevention (MC) and maternal and child health (MCH). PSI/Swaziland’s work focuses on prevention with a commitment to capacity development and systems strengthening.

In 2009, PSI/Swaziland surpassed its annual health impact targets by June – achieving 57,738 disability adjusted life years (DALYs) 2 from all its interventions.

HIV

More than 200,000 of Swaziland’s 1 million people are living with HIV, according to current estimates. Women are particularly vulnerable. Those between the ages of 15 and 49 constitute more than half of all HIV infections. And about 17,000 children are exposed to HIV infection at birth annually. National estimates include 130,000 AIDS orphans and vulnerable children and more than 15,000 households that are headed by children after an adult caregiver died.

Given the high HIV prevalence, PSI/Swaziland’s efforts are focused on HIV/AIDS. PSI’s socially marketed brands of male and female condoms constitute more than 80% of the market. A Corporate Aids Programme (CAP) also targets private sector employers with packages of services and products designed to fit employee needs.

Safe Water/Child Survival

PSI/Swaziland implements a clean water program and a deworming program. During the June 2009 cholera outbreak, PSI/Swaziland helped ensure immediate access to clean water for communities in the affected and surrounding areas.

Target Populations

In and out of school youth ages 15-29; urban couples planning to marry or become parents; migrant populations (HIV/AIDS); sexually active couples (reproductive health); pregnant women and children under five (child survival)
