PSI/China was set up in 2003 to improve HIV prevention using commercial marketing strategies and targeted behavior change interventions. In 2007, PSI/China added malaria prevention to its portfolio working in malaria endemic areas in Yunnan Province located in China’s Southwest, with funding from The Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria.

PSI/China's local partners for HIV/AIDS projects include the Yunnan Provincial AIDS Bureau, the Yunnan Provincial Narcotics Control Committee, Guangxi Provincial Center for Disease Control (CDC) and other local agencies. Local partners for the malaria project include CDCs in all project counties in Honghe, Xishuangbanna and Yuxi prefectures of Yunnan province. |

HIV/AIDS
Started by PSI and DFID funding, the current HIV prevention program cooperates closely with other USAID implementing agencies targeting injection drug users (IDUs) and female sex workers (FSWs) with the provision of a minimum package of services needed to prevent the spread of the disease. Behavior change interventions among IDUs and FSWs in the concentrated epidemic areas of Yunnan and Guangxi provinces focus on encouraging condom use with all partners and decreasing needle sharing. Included in the package of services are peer education, drop-in centers, community outreach, community events, support groups and health referrals. Past projects have targeted mobile workers and vulnerable youth.

Malaria
Since 2007, PSI/China has been implementing a social marketing project for the Global Fund in Yunnan province. PSI is the first organization to market long-lasting insecticidal nets (LLIN) in China, utilizing product promoters to introduce the product into rural areas in nine project counties in Honghe, Xishuangbanna and Yuxi prefectures of Yunnan province. Along with LLIN sales, PSI/China conducts behavior change communication campaigns using mass media, print media and interpersonal communication to motivate people in the rural areas using LLIN to prevent malaria. In conjunction with
the local Centers for Disease Control, PSI/China conducts
regular educational events at market days held in township
and village areas. In addition, PSI/China and its local affiliates
regularly visit health clinics, households, and relevant businesses
to provide materials and interpersonal communications
on malaria risk and LLIN usage. |
