Project Activities and Highlights
HIV/AIDS
|
| |
Basic Care Package
PSI/Uganda's HIV program activities
include the distribution of the Basic Care package for people living
with
HIV/AIDS (PLWHAs).
The package consists of commodities such as long lasting mosquito
nets, household water treatment and condoms to prevent the onset
of opportunistic infections among PLWHAs. These products have been
shown to prolong and improve the quality of life of PLWHAs, especially
those who do not have access to antiretroviral drugs. |
| |
Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs)
With funding from UNICEF,
mobile VCT services are provided to IDPs in 20 camps. Basic Care
Kits
are
provided
to those
who test positive and referrals made. Household water treatment and storage systems
are also provided to all households as a parallel intervention. |
| |
Mobile VCT
In 2006, PSI Uganda launched a mobile HIV Counseling and Testing program targeting
Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) in Pader District. The district has been
at the center of a 20 year war between the government and the rebel Lords Resistance
Army. The insurgency has left little infrastructure and access to services
for the districts camp-based population. PSI/Uganda also distributes free Waterguard to
members of this community. |
| |
Cross Generational Sex
In March 2007, PSI/Uganda will launch a nationwide program to address cross-generational
sex. The program will be implemented in universities and secondary schools
and will use mass media to challenge what has essentially become a social
norm in much of sub-Saharan Africa. |
| |
Condom Social Marketing
PSI/Uganda has marketed Trust condoms with a focus on increasing
accessibility in rural areas since 2006. |

Insecticide Treated Nets (ITNs)
PSI/Uganda is currently working with other partners
to assist the Ministry of Health in the nationwide distribution
of the Global Fund free ITNs to pregnant
women and children under five in 44 districts. PSI/Uganda also
distributes SmartNet, a long lasting insecticide treated
net (LLIN), targeting
rural populations through the general trade. |

Clean Delivery Kits
PSI/Uganda has continued to produce and supply Clean
Delivery Kits containing essential items for a clean and safe delivery.
The New Maama Kit is primarily purchased by relief agencies working
with refugees and other vulnerable populations, but is also sold
in the general trade mainly through pharmacies. |

PUR Purifier of Water
In 2004, PSI Uganda launched PUR, an affordable and easy-to-use
water treatment product. The introduction of PUR is part of a
safe water education program aimed at reducing sickness and death
caused by diarrheal diseases among children under five. The
program targets other vulnerable groups: people living with HIV/AIDS,
internally displaced persons and people living
in urban slums. PUR is available in retail outlets and pharmacies
across Uganda. |
| |
WaterGuard
PSI/Uganda markets WaterGuard solution, targeted
at the general population in urban and peri-urban areas. This product
is a liquid sodium hypochlorite solution that
will treat a normal supply for a family of
five for one month at a cost of only US $0.30 per month. WaterGuard
Tab serves to increase the range of point-of-use treatment options
available to our target populations. A single tablet treats 20 liters of water
and can be purchased in strips of two for a little as $0.03, providing a pocket
friendly option for those unable to purchase a bottle of the solution at a go. |
