This year, World Population Day is focused on vulnerable populations in emergencies. Women and adolescents are among the most affected populations during emergencies, often lacking basic reproductive health and family planning services. According to the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), one in five women is likely to be pregnant during a humanitarian crisis. Even under normal day-to-day circumstances, the leading cause of death and illness for women of childbearing age is reproductive health issues. When a disaster strikes, these issues are exacerbated because emergency care becomes unavailable.
Without access to reproductive health care, women face a greater risk of life-threatening outcomes such as, unwanted pregnancies, sexual violence and HIV. It is a human right and a priority for women and adolescents to have access to basic health care, security and their dignity.
How does PSI fulfill the rights and meet the sexual and reproductive health needs of women and girls during emergencies? Find out below.
