PSI’s India Private Limited company (PSI IPL) is the latest stage in PSI’s longstanding presence in India. Since starting in India in 1988, PSI has promoted the social marketing of condoms and other family planning solutions throughout India. In an effort to better enable Sara to access health services without suffering financial hardship, PSI asked: How do we better meet Sara’s needs and support the Government to deliver on universal health care? How do we do this in a way that leverages donor, investor and internal resources more effectively? The India market is evolving requiring our business model needed to also evolve. As such we have created a partnership between two entities in India: PSI’s newly established social enterprise, the PSI India Private Limited (LLC) and PSI India, PSI’s non-profit entity. The LLC, formed under the Companies Act of 2013, and PSI India are two distinct and separate entities who have shared interests and values. This development model will allow PSI in India to invest in relationships and opportunities that stimulate the market to achieve health impact at scale. In addition, by generating revenue not tied to external funding PSI is able to respond quickly to Sara’s changing needs and ensure that subsidy is managed effectively and applied where most needed.
PSI IPL’s mission is to provide consumers with affordable family planning and health care products that are safe and effective, allowing consumers to lead healthier, more productive lives. IPL is currently present in 12 states throughout India, with plans to expand.
With the second-largest population by country in the world (estimated at nearly 1.3 billion people) inhabiting only 2.4% of the world’s available land mass, the need for family planning is recognized as a top priority by the Indian government. India was the first country in the world to launch a government family planning program, in 1952. Since 1988, PSI’s work in India has complemented that of the Indian government, addressing market failures in the public health sphere to ensure quality products are available at affordable prices. PSI IPL is a continuation of this work, developing and marketing a variety of family planning products for Indians to safely plan the families they desire.
PSI IPL’s main office in New Delhi, India, is home to approximately 21 employees. In addition, PSI IPL employs another 300+ sales executives and managers across the 12 states where we are currently operating. In compliance with our formation under the Companies Act of 2013, PSI IPL’s Board of Directors is comprised of three US-based PSI senior staff, as well as PSI IPL’s Managing director.

PSI IPL’s products are sold by registered pharmacists (chemists) as well as provided by registered health practitioners. In addition to our sales staff (who promote and sell our products to registered pharmacies and health practitioners), PSI IPL advertises our products to the Indian public through a combination of print, television, and digital media. All our publicity and education efforts are geared towards ensuring uptake and safe use of our family planning products as part of a holistic approach to promoting healthy families and lives across India.
PSI IPL is funded by a combination of PSI’s own funds and a grant from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. PSI IPL also pursues other funding sources to support work in family planning and reproductive health.
