All women deserve choice, but in Pakistan, not all women have it. In Pakistan where progress toward health equity is stalling, PSI increases access to and uptake of contraception by reaching women through sources they trust: women\u2019s groups, neighborhood clinics, and recommendations from other women.<\/p>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t

With\u00a0207 million\u00a0residents, Pakistan ranks as the world\u2019s sixth most populous country<\/span>.<\/span> And it\u2019s only projected to grow; by 2050<\/strong>, the country\u2019s population will reach an estimated 350+ million people.\u00a0<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

Though immense progress\u00a0has been made over the past decades<\/span>, the number of women who want to prevent pregnancy but are using modern contraceptive methods has plateaued.<\/span><\/p>

The implications run deep; t<\/span>oday, n<\/span>early 40% of pregnancies in Pakistan are unintended<\/span>\u00a0\u2013\u00a0<\/span>often\u00a0<\/span>putting at risk the lives of mothers, their\u00a0<\/span>children<\/span>\u00a0and their families.<\/span><\/span><\/p>

These unintended pregnancies are\u00a0<\/span>in part\u00a0<\/span>due t<\/span>o deeply rooted opposition to modern contraceptives:<\/span>\u00a0cultural stigma, fear of side effects<\/span>\u00a0or other health risks from medications<\/span>, or opposition from family<\/span>\u00a0all prevent women from seeking out contraception<\/span>. COVID-19 has only introduced more\u00a0<\/span>challenges to access<\/span>, with physical barriers to treatment or product distribution due to social distancing and other cautions.<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t

That\u2019s why in Pakistan, PSI builds trust to stamp out stigma, right from the start. By working with community health workers, private providers, and extension workers, we\u2019re addressing women\u2019s concerns around contraception by reaching them where they\u2019re comfortable and through dependable sources.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

<\/span>Her friend told her about PSI\u2019s program and how she could help to provide other women with trusted information about and access to contraception. <\/span>\u00a0

Sughra\u00a0signed up, knowing immediately who she needed to\u00a0reach out\u00a0to:\u00a0her daughter-in-law,\u00a0Qaisra.\u00a0Qaisra\u00a0had two children and was feeling overwhelmed by the stress of caring for her family.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0
<\/span>Sughra\u00a0advised her daughter-in-law to take up a contraceptive method so she could space out\u00a0her future children and\u00a0alleviate some of her stress.\u00a0Given\u00a0that\u00a0family, like mothers-in-law, can often be the\u00a0pressure behind a growing family, women like\u00a0Sughra\u00a0are flipping the script\u00a0for\u00a0contraceptive choice\u00a0in Pakistan.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

Despite progress there are many other women that still don\u2019t have access to contraceptive solutions. 52% of married women of reproductive age (15-49) in Pakistan who want to prevent pregnancy are not using a modern contraceptive method.
