We educate caregivers on the importance of prompt care seeking behavior when a child presents with cough and rapid breathing, and we distribute pre-packaged therapy for pneumonia.
In line with World Health Organization (WHO) and country guidelines, the pre-packaged therapy for pneumonia kit contains the appropriate dose of amoxicillin dispersible tables (Amox DT) for a one-course treatment of a pneumonia episode. The quality assured antibiotic is a dispersible, flavored formulation, and packaged in strength and dosage suitable for two age groups of children (two to 11 months and one to five years old). The pre-packaged treatments are designed for easy administration by the caregiver at home; instructions are in local languages and reinforced by simple illustrations so that the dosage is clear to high and low literacy caregivers alike.
We work in accordance with national country guidelines to provide treatment through private-sector clinics, pharmacies, drug shops and community-based outreach providers to treat pneumonia. Where possible, community health workers are used to distribute pneumonia pre-packaged treatment (PPT). In line with the integrated management of childhood illness (IMCI) protocol, we work with local partners to train community health workers and medical providers on pneumonia diagnosis and treatment, as well as provide supervision and medical detailing.
To motivate demand for quality care and increase care seeking behavior, we target comprehensive communication campaigns to caregivers and providers.
