A Spotlight on a New Coalition Steering Committee Member

A Spotlight on SCTG Coalition Steering Committee member Milka Dinev

The Coalition Steering Committee advises the Secretariat and provides oversight of SCTG coalition functions, ensuring a strong value proposition for members that is supportive of the SCTG’s strategic priorities. New Steering Committee member Milka Dinev, Regional Senior Advisor to ForoLAC and the MHS Caucus under the Secretariat of the Reproductive Health Supplies Coalition, answers questions about her expertise and passion for self-care below!

What should we know about you?

I am a very committed person to the cause of sexual and reproductive health and rights and believe that self-care is the way of the future. I have been in this field for almost 4 decades, and my strongest competency is in management. Outside of work, I am a red belt in Tae Kwon Do, read at least 2-3 books per month, and knit every night.

What inspired you to join the SCTG Coalition Steering Committee?

I was invited by my colleague Aminatou Sar, Country Representative of PATH in Senegal and she encouraged me to take action on a cause that is close to my heart and my daily work.

What does self-care mean to you? And why is it integral to achieving universal health coverage?

Self-care is the power that each person has to take all the necessary measures to take care of his/her own health. It complements the care that we all receive from the health system. Self-care is a demonstration of our innate sense of self preservation and protection.

In light of the new vision, mission and strategy for SCTG, how do you see the coalition and the self-care movement evolving in the next five years?

The strategy provides a clear way for the future. We need to be very vocal and loud in our efforts to mobilize all partners, resources, and demand accountability from international and national authorities. I am glad to be given the opportunity to be part of this movement that can grow tremendously.

Given your work as an advocate, what role can your sector play in expanding the safe and effective practice of self-care?

In my role on the RHSC Secretariat, I see myself advocating and working with manufacturers to design innovative devices for self-care. The RHSC can play a huge role in expanding the practice of self-care, since we are the largest RH membership organization in the world and have 530 plus institutional members in all continents.

Anything else you would like to share about yourself?

I am very honored to have been selected to the SCTG Steering Committee and I am looking forward to serving our constituency.
