{"id":61859,"date":"2021-07-12T17:58:00","date_gmt":"2021-07-12T21:58:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.psi.org\/?post_type=disc-post&#038;p=61859"},"modified":"2024-06-05T19:09:16","modified_gmt":"2024-06-05T23:09:16","slug":"an-online-contraceptive-shop","status":"publish","type":"disc-post","link":"https:\/\/www.psi.org\/pt\/disc-post\/an-online-contraceptive-shop\/","title":{"rendered":"AN ONLINE CONTRACEPTIVE SHOP?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>BY JAMES BROWN, PARTNERSHIPS LEAD DISC (DELIVERING INNOVATION IN SELF-CARE)<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Like most global health initiatives, when COVID-19 mushroomed into a worldwide emergency last year, Delivering Innovations in Self-Care&nbsp;(DISC)&nbsp;had to adapt&nbsp;to a set of new and unique needs.&nbsp;Early estimates suggested that millions of women using a modern contraceptive method would be unable to get refills due to restricted mobility,&nbsp;potentially leading&nbsp;to a precipitous rise in unintended pregnancies.&nbsp;One year into the pandemic, UNFPA&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.unfpa.org\/sites\/default\/files\/resource-pdf\/COVID_Impact_FP_V5.pdf\">estimates<\/a>&nbsp;that COVID-19 disrupted contraceptive use for about 12 million women, leading to nearly 1.4 million unintended pregnancies&nbsp;in&nbsp;2020 across 115 low- and middle-income countries.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To&nbsp;help&nbsp;preserve hard-earned&nbsp;gains in&nbsp;sexual&nbsp;and&nbsp;reproductive&nbsp;health&nbsp;(SRH)&nbsp;access,&nbsp;agency,&nbsp;and choice,&nbsp;DISC&nbsp;sought&nbsp;new ways to bring contraceptive commodities and services closer to consumers.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In Nigeria,&nbsp;a country&nbsp;where&nbsp;about&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.connectingafrica.com\/author.asp?section_id=761&amp;doc_id=767400\">50% of the population uses the Internet<\/a>,&nbsp;around 90% of the total population have mobile phones&nbsp;and where&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/oxfordbusinessgroup.com\/analysis\/pay-demographics-and-increasing-internet-uptake-favour-e-commerce-expansion#:~:text=According%20to%20online%20retailer%20Jumia,expected%20to%20in%20the%20future.\">a majority of internet users shop online<\/a>,&nbsp;DISC&nbsp;forged a public\u2013private partnership with&nbsp;the country\u2019s&nbsp;leading e-retailer,&nbsp;Konga. The aim was to test how feasible and desirable the e-retail channel might be as a source for accessing contraception safely&nbsp;during COVID-19.&nbsp;While&nbsp;e-retail&nbsp;presents obvious benefits&nbsp;that&nbsp;include convenience and&nbsp;minimal social contact,&nbsp;DISC&nbsp;wanted to&nbsp;build&nbsp;understanding about&nbsp;how&nbsp;women would&nbsp;value&nbsp;the platform&nbsp;when it comes&nbsp;to contraception.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">IMPROVING THE SHOPPER EXPERIENCE&nbsp;AND&nbsp;PRODUCT RANGE&nbsp;<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Prior to this partnership, the family planning range available on&nbsp;Konga\u2019s&nbsp;website had largely been limited to&nbsp;condoms, and the products had been integrated into a much larger category of \u2018Sexual Wellness,\u2019 which included sex toys, lingerie, sex enhancers,&nbsp;and more.&nbsp;To improve the online shopper experience and make it easier for users to navigate between different types of contraceptives,&nbsp;DISC worked closely with Konga to create&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.konga.com\/content\/contraceptives\">a standalone category for contraception<\/a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;optimize&nbsp;the products,&nbsp;ensuring the selection was limited to relevant products from quality assured suppliers.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter is-resized\" id=\"attachment_48550\"><a href=\"https:\/\/media.psi.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/30234714\/konga-site-before.jpeg\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"195\" src=\"https:\/\/media.psi.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/30234714\/konga-site-before-300x195.jpeg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-48550\" style=\"width:300px;height:auto\" srcset=\"https:\/\/media.psi.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/30234714\/konga-site-before-300x195.jpeg 300w, https:\/\/media.psi.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/30234714\/konga-site-before-31x20.jpeg 31w, https:\/\/media.psi.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/30234714\/konga-site-before.jpeg 706w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Konga website before partnership<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>DISC also worked with Konga to engage the Federal Ministry of Health (including the Health Promotion Unit and the Family Health Department) and the Pharmaceutical Council on Nigeria to unlock regulatory barriers (including having a registered pharmacist available) and enable the e-retailer to expand its product offering beyond condoms into oral and emergency contraceptives.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter\" id=\"attachment_48551\"><a href=\"https:\/\/media.psi.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/30234714\/konga-site-after.jpeg\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"248\" src=\"https:\/\/media.psi.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/30234714\/konga-site-after-300x248.jpeg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-48551\" srcset=\"https:\/\/media.psi.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/30234714\/konga-site-after-300x248.jpeg 300w, https:\/\/media.psi.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/30234714\/konga-site-after-768x636.jpeg 768w, https:\/\/media.psi.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/30234714\/konga-site-after-31x27.jpeg 31w, https:\/\/media.psi.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/30234714\/konga-site-after.jpeg 824w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Konga website after partnership<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>To provide consumers with access to quality ongoing support and information, DISC partnered with Marie Stopes Nigeria\u2019s SRH call center. Women visiting the contraception page on Konga were signposted&nbsp;to the Marie Stopes hotline where they could speak to a trained operator to obtain information and&nbsp;counseling&nbsp;about their reproductive and sexual health, and the various contraceptive options being offered.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">BUILDING AWARENESS&nbsp;AND&nbsp;CREATING DEMAND&nbsp;<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Having&nbsp;optimized&nbsp;the online shopping experience&nbsp;and product range,&nbsp;DISC worked with Konga to highlight the relevance of contraception during COVID-19 and build awareness of the availability of contraception on the e-retail platform. The messaging used&nbsp;humor&nbsp;to recognize that couples were spending more time together during COVID-19 and that the absence of contraception due to social mobility constraints may mean they weren\u2019t able to fully enjoy that time together.&nbsp;E-retail was presented as a solution to that challenge and the messages reinforced additional benefits of the platform, such as discretion and convenience.&nbsp;Recognizing that e-retail was not an established channel for buying contraception,&nbsp;DISC and Konga&nbsp;offered&nbsp;free delivery during the campaign with an eye&nbsp;to&nbsp;reducing&nbsp;purchasing&nbsp;barriers,&nbsp;helping to&nbsp;establish&nbsp;this new&nbsp;shopping&nbsp;behavior.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/media.psi.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/30234712\/konga.com-covid19.jpeg\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"228\" src=\"https:\/\/media.psi.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/30234712\/konga.com-covid19-300x228.jpeg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-48554\" srcset=\"https:\/\/media.psi.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/30234712\/konga.com-covid19-300x228.jpeg 300w, https:\/\/media.psi.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/30234712\/konga.com-covid19-31x24.jpeg 31w, https:\/\/media.psi.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/30234712\/konga.com-covid19.jpeg 609w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The communication campaign was activated in partnership with an international media agency, Population Media Center (PMC),&nbsp;through radio and social media and also directly to the millions of&nbsp;existing online shoppers already visiting Konga\u2019s platform,&nbsp;an audience where conversion rates might be expected to be higher due to established behavior of shopping online (albeit not for contraception).&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">RESULTS&nbsp;<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Over the course of&nbsp;the&nbsp;three-month campaign, the main contraception landing page&nbsp;on&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.konga.com\/merchant\/129607\">Konga\u2019s&nbsp;website<\/a>&nbsp;received&nbsp;778,345&nbsp;views from 145,000&nbsp;unique users.&nbsp;While these numbers are encouraging, conversion to sale was low&nbsp;relative&nbsp;to the investment in marketing,&nbsp;with only&nbsp;2,972&nbsp;units&nbsp;of contraception&nbsp;sold.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">KEY&nbsp;LEARNINGS&nbsp;AND NEXT STEPS&nbsp;<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>E-retail is a rapidly growing\u00a0channel\u00a0in\u00a0Nigeria,\u00a0but\u00a0there\u00a0is a need to further invest in\u00a0behavior\u00a0change to\u00a0establish\u00a0it\u00a0as\u00a0a credible\u00a0and\u00a0trusted\u00a0channel\u00a0for purchasing contraceptives.\u00a0As we continue to implement the\u00a0DISC\u00a0project,\u00a0we\u00a0plan to invest more time into\u00a0building\u00a0our\u00a0understanding\u00a0of consumer behavior and the barriers related to shopping online for contraception. Some findings\u00a0from\u00a0our\u00a0recent design work with consumers\u00a0(particularly\u00a0youth)\u00a0indicate\u00a0they\u00a0are currently uncomfortable receiving contraception directly\u00a0to their home,\u00a0preferring instead for convenient drop-off points they can collect products from\u2014an insight\u00a0the project is now prototyping around.\u00a0\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The product that\u00a0experienced the most growth was emergency contraception,\u00a0a finding which resonates\u00a0with\u00a0a similar\u00a0DISC\u00a0project in Uganda.\u00a0This\u00a0indicates that\u00a0the e-retail\u00a0channel might be better suited to specific contraception products,\u00a0where the added benefits of discretion and convenience might be of more value to the emergency contraception shopper than to shoppers of the other contraceptive products\u00a0(such as condoms and oral contraceptives).\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>As the project continues to evolve, we look forward to building on these learnings and continuing to find more, and different, ways to reach women to ensure that they have access to the SRH products and services they want and need, at their convenience.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><em>ABOUT THE DISC PROJECT<\/em>&nbsp;<\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p><em>DISC is a five-year project funded by the Children\u2019s Investment Fund Foundation, which supports women\u2014particularly urban mothers and young women aged 20-24\u2014to take more control over their sexual and reproductive health (SRH) needs, including and beyond contraception. The project aims to demonstrate that self-care\u2014beginning with contraceptive self-injection\u2014is a viable cornerstone of SRH care and that by offering women increased voice, choice and agency over their health, self-care offers health systems a new and critical partner: consumers themselves.<\/em>&nbsp;<em>The DISC project is actively looking for innovative public and private partnerships to expand access and availability of self-care information, support, products, and services.
