PSI\/Malawi is launching the \u2018Show her that you CARE\u2019 male involvement campaign for the CARE female condom with a sponsored social football tournament.
\nThe tournament takes place this weekend, on March 20 and 21, at the College of Medicine Sports Complex, Blantyre with teams competing to become the CARE champions and win K100,000.<\/p>\n
According to a statement by PSI Malawi e-mailed to Nyasa Times, the tournament involves 24 six-aside teams and takes place over the two days.<\/p>\n
The first day is a mini-league format with the top four teams from each league going onto the knockout stages on the second day. Teams playing include FMB, Toyota Malawi, Illovo, G4S Securicor, Old Mutual and Indebank.<\/p>\n
The tournament starts at 8 a.m. on Saturday March 20 with the final at 2 p.m. on Sunday March 21. The winning team will become the CARE football champions and win prize money of K100,000 (the runners-up will win K75,000 and third place K50,000).<\/p>\n
A social netball tournament will also be played alongside the football tournament with prize money of K 75,000 (the runners-up will win K50,000 and third place K35,000).<\/p>\n
In addition, PSI\/Malawi will subsequently take the football tournament to Mponela to help promote CARE to the rural male audience.<\/p>\n
\u201cAlthough HIV prevalence has been consistently higher in Malawian women (13 per cent) than men (10 per cent), measures to control the spread of HIV\/AIDS among the sexually active population have historically focused on the distribution and promotion of male condoms.<\/p>\n
However, the female condom is now also being promoted and is widely available from barbers, pharmacies, drugstores and private clinics,\u201d says PSI in the statement<\/p>\n
\u201cThe CARE female condom is the only female-initiated dual protection method available but women who choose it also need their partners to be happy with their choice. Even though the woman can initiate use of the female condom the man also needs to show her that he cares by encouraging her to use it.<\/p>\n
\u201cPSI\/Malawi is therefore using the \u2018Show her that you CARE\u2019 campaign to raise awareness and acceptance of the female condom amongst men,\u201d the statement says.<\/p>\n
Population Services International\/Malawi (PSI\/Malawi) is engaged in behaviour change communication to promote and social market a range of health products and behaviours that directly address significant health concerns faced by Malawians.<\/p>\n
The products promoted by PSI\/Malawi include Chishango male condoms, CARE female condoms, Thanzi Oral Rehydration Salts, WaterGuard point-of-use water treatment products, Chitetezo brand insecticide treated mosquito nets as well as Safeplan injectable contraceptives and oral contraceptives.<\/p>\n
