Em todo o mundo, estima-se que 340.000 mulheres morrem todos os anos de causas relacionadas com a gravidez, a maioria das quais evit\u00e1veis. Trinta e oito por cento das gravidezes n\u00e3o s\u00e3o planeadas, o que leva a 42 milh\u00f5es de abortos todos os anos. Muitas destas gravidezes indesejadas s\u00e3o de alto risco, ocorrendo entre mulheres no in\u00edcio ou no fim dos seus anos reprodutivos, ou demasiado cedo ap\u00f3s uma gravidez anterior. Com demasiada frequ\u00eancia, os abortos n\u00e3o s\u00e3o seguros e resultam em morte ou incapacidade.
