Counseling for Choice\u202f(C4C)\u202fis an evidence-based approach to contraceptive counseling\u202fthat supports clients\u202fto\u202fdecide which method is right for them.\u202fBy addressing\u202fmany of the root causes of unmet need for contraception\u202fand discontinuation,\u202fC4C\u202faims to\u202fchange how\u202fproviders and clients participate in\u202fvoluntary\u202ffamily planning\u202f(FP)\u202fcounseling discussions.\u202f <\/span>The approach comprises a thorough training in C4C techniques and the use of the\u202f<\/span>Choice Book for Providers<\/span><\/i>, a job aid and visual tool providers use with clients during counseling sessions.\u202f\u202f<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

We\u2019ve made the C4C tools and approach available as a global good, for use by implementers like you.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

Clients are the experts on their own lives, and their needs and preferences should be the foundation of their healthcare decisions. <\/span>The evidence for C4C and our <\/span>experience <\/span>across<\/span> our own programs has shown that women who receive<\/span> FP counseling from a C4C trained provider fe<\/span>el more<\/span> respected by their provider and believe<\/span> that their preferences about contraception <\/span>are <\/span>taken seriously. <\/span>We\u2019ve<\/span> also learned <\/span><\/span>that C<\/span><\/span><\/span>4C lead<\/span>s<\/span> to<\/span> a<\/span> better quality of care experience for the client<\/span> and improvements across multiple indicators of <\/span><\/span>person-centered<\/span><\/span><\/span> care.<\/span><\/span><\/p><\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t

Informed choice is fundamental to FP service delivery<\/span>, but clients need <\/span>information conveyed to them in a way that is <\/span>appropriate<\/span> and relevant to them<\/span>. <\/span>Through<\/span> our <\/span>evaluations of<\/span> C4C, PSI has learned that clients counseled using the C4C approach feel that they have the information they need and the ability to use their voice and choice to make the best decision for them<\/span>. Clients <\/span>counseled with the C4C approach also<\/span> consistently report <\/span>that <\/span>C4C<\/span> provider<\/span>s<\/span> address<\/span> their concerns<\/span> about contraception<\/span> and <\/span>help them feel confident about their decisions<\/span>.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p><\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t

C4C employs the concept of shared decision-making in its counseling approach.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>In more traditional forms of FP counseling, sessions can often appear one-sided,\u202fdominated\u202fby the provider\u2019s <\/span>voice<\/span> and filled with an overload of information. The C4C approach trains providers to <\/span>solicit<\/span>\u202fimportant input\u202ffrom the client\u202fon\u202finformation\u202fthat\u202fthey are\u202funiquely placed to provide:\u202ftheir\u202fpast experiences\u202fwith FP, information about\u202ftheir\u202flifestyles, and which contraceptive\u2019s benefits are most attractive to\u202fthem.\u202fEvidence highlights that by using the C4C approach, clients report feeling more respected\u202fand report a better overall counseling experience.<\/span><\/span><\/p><\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t

C4C was designed to improve the counseling experience and to better support clients to choose the method that is right for them.<\/span> When clients are in control of their contraceptive decisions, they can choose methods that suit their lifestyle, leaving them satisfied with their choice and content to continue using their method for as long as they are in need.<\/span><\/span><\/p><\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t

C4C IS GROUNDED

In our decades <\/span>long experience<\/span> with counseling, PSI recognized a persistent lack of evidence to back up the packages, approaches, and tools often used to train providers on contraceptive counseling. C4C aims to address this gap. <\/span>Developed collaboratively, <\/span><\/span>C4C pulls from best practices that other methods and approaches have to <\/span>offer and<\/span> incorporates PSI\u2019s commitment to placing clients at the center of our work.\u202fThe suite of C4C resources \u2013 tested and refined at the country-level \u2013 equip providers\u202fwith\u202fthe training and tools to apply the C4C approach.<\/span><\/span> As a result, clients report a better counseling experience that is more Person Centered and tailored to their individual needs.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t
