The recent publications cited below highlight research findings across evidence priorities: integration of client experience into healthcare delivery, identifying innovative channels to reach consumers with products and services, and expansion of self-care interventions.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Key findings from these publications include:\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><!-- \/wp:paragraph --><!-- wp:list --><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>O\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/journals.sagepub.com\/doi\/10.1177\/15248399211003544\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">process<\/a>\u00a0of integrating client voice into healthcare interventions\u00a0is important but challenging;\u00a0focusing on the\u00a0client\u00a0experience can result\u00a0in important improvements in\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/journals.plos.org\/plosone\/article?id=10.1371\/journal.pone.0242909\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">clinical quality<\/a>.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>Innovative strategies, such as the use of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/link.springer.com\/article\/10.1007%2Fs10461-020-02991-2\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">peer counselor support<\/a>\u00a0to address barriers to HIV care-seeking\u00a0and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/journals.plos.org\/plosone\/article?id=10.1371\/journal.pone.0229655\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">school-based delivery<\/a>\u00a0of\u00a0water, sanitation, and hygiene interventions,\u00a0help us\u00a0reach the right consumers with the right healthcare products and services.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>The knowledge base for self-care is expanding, with\u00a0evidence\u00a0emerging\u00a0on\u00a0how to reach different population groups,\u00a0including\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/bmcpublichealth.biomedcentral.com\/articles\/10.1186\/s12889-021-10573-7\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">HIV self-testing for older adults<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0self-care for\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/conflictandhealth.biomedcentral.com\/articles\/10.1186\/s13031-021-00358-5\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">sexual and reproductive health\u00a0in humanitarian settings<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><!-- \/wp:spacer --><!-- wp:heading --><\/p>\n<h2>Client experience:\u00a0Integrating client voice and experience into healthcare interventions<\/h2>\n<p><!-- \/wp:heading --><!-- wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p><!-- \/wp:paragraph --><!-- wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p>A publication in\u00a0<em>\u202f<\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1177\/15248399211003544\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><em>Health Promotion Practice<\/em><\/a>\u202f documents the youth-led participatory approach to design used by\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/a360learninghub.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">A360 (Adolescents 360)<\/a>\u00a0through\u00a0the lenses of\u00a0community-based participatory action research and human-centered design. A360 key partners\u2014PSI, IDEO.org, and\u00a0Itad\u2014joined with consultant and lead author\u00a0Ibidun\u00a0Fakoya\u00a0of King\u2019s College London to critically analyze A360\u2019s youth-participatory design approach.\u00a0<strong>The authors note the importance and challenges of meaningfully engaging with youth throughout the design and implementation process to understand and respond to youth experiences with resulting sexual and reproductive health interventions<\/strong>.\u202fKey challenges included the need for strategies to ensure continued and consistent levels of youth participation from design through implementation and the required investment of resources to sufficiently prepare youth and adult team members to successfully participate in project phases as partners.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><!-- \/wp:paragraph --><!-- wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p>Multiple\u00a0recent\u00a0publications\u00a0that include PSI India co-authors\u00a0describe\u00a0the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1371\/journal.pone.0242909\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">evaluation<\/a>\u00a0e\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1080\/26410397.2021.1892570\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">scale up<\/a>\u00a0of a\u00a0locally designed\u00a0person-centered maternity care\u00a0intervention\u00a0in public facilities in Uttar Pradesh.\u00a0These studies use an innovative validated scale for person-centered maternity care to measure\u00a0and understand\u00a0client experience of care.<strong>\u00a0Findings indicate\u00a0that scaling up the quality improvement intervention was associated with\u00a0improvements in\u00a0clinical quality and in the\u00a0client experience of maternity care<\/strong>.\u00a0Other publications involving PSI India coauthors\u00a0examine a person-centered\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/bmchealthservres.biomedcentral.com\/articles\/10.1186\/s12913-020-05995-9\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">family planning intervention<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0behavior related to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/gatesopenresearch.org\/articles\/4-111\/v1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">essential birth practices<\/a>\u00a0among nurses and other birth coaches.<br \/><span style=\"font-size: 15px; color: var( --e-global-color-text ); font-family: var( --e-global-typography-text-font-family ), Sans-serif;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><!-- \/wp:spacer --><!-- wp:heading --><\/p>\n<h2>Channel\u00a0Innovation: Bringing products and services closer to consumers<\/h2>\n<p><!-- \/wp:heading --><!-- wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p><!-- \/wp:paragraph --><!-- wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p>CommLink\u00a0was a PSI-implemented case-management program in Eswatini that leveraged peer counselors to connect community-diagnosed people living with HIV to care. Led by Duncan\u00a0MacKellar\u00a0of the Centers for Disease Control\u00a0and Prevention, a publication on\u00a0CommLink\u00a0in\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/link.springer.com\/article\/10.1007%2Fs10461-020-02991-2\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><em>AIDS and Behavior<\/em><\/a>\u00a0reports that\u00a0<strong>peer counselors successfully resolved a range of key barriers to HIV care seeking behavior, including concerns about stigma, cost and quality of care<\/strong>.\u00a0This research supports PSI\u2019s priority to understand ways to\u00a0efficiently and effectively reach prioritized populations with HIV treatment services.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><!-- \/wp:paragraph --><!-- wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p>James Bell of Ipsos, along with PSI co-authors\u00a0Shawn Malone, Project Director, Kristen Little,\u00a0Senior Technical Advisor for Strategic Research,\u00a0and Nina\u00a0Hasen,\u00a0Director of HIV\/TB,\u00a0conducted a\u202f<a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1371\/journal.pone.0247483\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">psycho-behavioral segmentation<\/a>\u202fof men at high risk of acquiring HIV in South Africa. This work was done as part of the PSI-led\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.psi.org\/pt\/2020\/06\/coach-mpilo\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Break the Cycle project<\/a>, funded by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. This segmentation informed\u202f<strong>a human-centered design process that\u00a0resulted in\u00a0a range of optimally targeted HIV testing and treatment interventions for men.<\/strong>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><!-- \/wp:paragraph --><!-- wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p>A\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1371\/journal.pone.0229655\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">publication<\/a>\u00a0led by James Tidwell of the Harvard Kennedy School of Government highlights PSI\u2019s contribution to\u00a0understanding\u00a0which\u00a0channels are most effective for delivering water, sanitation and hygiene interventions to various consumer segments. Addressing the evidence gap for school-based handwashing interventions in low- and middle-income countries, this evaluation\u00a0of\u00a0an intervention implemented by PSI in\u00a0Bihar, India,\u00a0found positive effects\u00a0on handwashing before eating. The authors\u00a0reflect on\u00a0<strong>the benefits of school-based programs as a complement to community-based programs to achieve handwashing behavior change<\/strong>.<br \/><span style=\"font-size: 15px; color: var( --e-global-color-text ); font-family: var( --e-global-typography-text-font-family ), Sans-serif;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><!-- \/wp:spacer --><!-- wp:heading --><\/p>\n<h2>Self-care:\u00a0Catalyzing self-care options for consumers<\/h2>\n<p><!-- \/wp:heading --><!-- wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p><!-- \/wp:paragraph --><!-- wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p>One of PSI\u2019s research priorities for self-care is to identify and understand approaches\u00a0for driving\u00a0demand for quality assured\u00a0self-care products, including\u00a0HIV self-testing. A <a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1186\/s12889-021-10573-7\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">publication<\/a> describing a qualitative study that examined HIV risk and self-testing among midlife-older adults in Malawi was part of the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.psi.org\/pt\/project\/star\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">HIV Self-Testing Africa\u00a0(STAR)\u00a0Initiative<\/a> and included as a co-author Karin\u00a0Hatzold,\u00a0PSI\u2019s\u00a0Associate Director and project Director for HIV.\u00a0The authors\u00a0conclude that\u00a0<strong>although HIV self-testing has often been oriented toward young people, it may be a valuable and acceptable tool for reaching older adults who\u00a0might\u00a0not otherwise uptake conventional HIV testing<\/strong>.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><!-- \/wp:paragraph --><!-- wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p>A\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1002\/hec.3998\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">study<\/a>\u00a0conducted in two urban areas of Kenya used an experimental economic method to elicit willingness to pay for HIV self-testing in a sample of adults attending clinics and pharmacies. Authors included Patrick Aylward, former Senior Market Dynamics\u00a0Advisor,\u00a0and Kristen Little,\u00a0Senior Technical Advisor for Strategic Research,\u00a0from PSI and Hildah Essendi, Director of Research and Metrics\u00a0for\u00a0Population\u00a0Services\u00a0Kenya.\u00a0Findings\u00a0indicated\u00a0<strong>high demand for HIV self-testing at low prices\u00a0but\u00a0possible\u00a0challenges achieving testing targets at current market prices<\/strong>.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><!-- \/wp:paragraph --><!-- wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p>A commentary on SRH self-care in humanitarian settings in\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1186\/s13031-021-00358-5\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><em>Conflict and Health<\/em><\/a>\u00a0includes\u00a0PSI\u2019s\u00a0Pierre Moon, Director of\u00a0MOMENTUM Private Healthcare Delivery,\u00a0as a co-author and acknowledges the support of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.psi.org\/pt\/project\/self-care\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Self-Care Trailblazer Group<\/a>.<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>They describe\u00a0<strong>the important role that self-care can play in the broader\u00a0sexual and reproductive health\u00a0continuum of care in fragile settings<\/strong>.
