World Malaria Day is a time to recommit to progress\u00a0towards\u00a0reaching\u00a0the last mile goal of ending malaria.\u202fIn\u00a02022<\/a>, USAID committed $746million\u00a0through the U.S. President\u2019s Malaria Initiative (PMI)\u00a0to that goal\u00a0which benefitted more than 700 million people. As PMI\u2019s flagship global service delivery project, PMI Impact Malaria owes\u00a0our\u00a0continued\u00a0impact\u00a0to the generosity of the American people and Congressional support, whose sustained\u00a0investments in\u00a0USAID\u2019s\u00a0PMI\u00a0align with this year\u2019s World Malaria Day theme:\u00a0Time to deliver zero malaria: invest, innovate, implement.\u202f\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

To reach the unreached with lifesaving malaria services, PMI Impact Malaria supports\u00a018\u00a0partner countries and their national malaria programs\u00a0to\u00a0meet their strategic goals and advance their\u00a0efforts to\u00a0control and\u00a0eliminate\u00a0malaria. We support investments in essential health workers, developing innovative approaches, and implementing quality improvement tools to end malaria. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Invest\u00a0<\/h5>\n\n\n\n

PMI Impact Malaria is committed to investing\u00a0in local leadership\u00a0to strengthen\u00a0Ministries of Health\u00a0in the\u00a0countries\u00a0where we work\u00a0to better deliver on their commitment towards zero malaria. These investments support\u00a0health workers like\u00a0Foun\u00e8ba\u00a0Traor\u00e9\u00a0in Mali<\/a>, who\u00a0is her community\u2019s\u00a0lifeline\u00a0providing\u00a0essential health services that close the gap in quality care. By investing in\u00a0local leadership and\u00a0health workers like\u00a0Foun\u00e8ba<\/a>, national governments can deliver services, tools, and medicine to where they are needed most\u00a0and build\u00a0resilient, accessible health systems.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Innovate<\/h5>\n\n\n\n

Despite global funding setbacks and health system disruptions\u00a0from\u00a0the pandemic,\u00a0national malaria programs\u00a0continue to innovate\u00a0strategies that adapt to\u00a0health crises.\u00a0To support them,\u00a0PMI Impact Malaria\u00a0works with country teams to\u00a0help\u00a0develop\u00a0and deliver these innovations\u00a0to achieve sustainable health outcomes. In the Greater Mekong Subregion,\u00a0we support an\u00a0innovative surveillance approach\u202fthat combats antimalarial resistance and meets regional elimination goals<\/a>. In Burkina Faso, Cameroon, Mali, and Niger, we continue to support\u202fadaptations to seasonal malaria chemoprevention campaigns<\/a>\u202fto reach millions of children\u00a0each year.\u00a0These\u00a0are among many\u00a0efforts\u00a0that\u00a0create\u00a0safer environments and help health systems stay ahead of global challenges.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Implement<\/h5>\n\n\n\n

Finally, national governments continue to lead by implementing tools that improve the quality of malaria service delivery. PMI Impact Malaria supports the implementation of quality improvement efforts through Outreach, Training and Supportive Supervision Plus (OTSS+)<\/a>. This supportive, on-the-job training for health workers<\/a> catalyzes the already effective efforts of regional governments and community health facilities by integrating technology, tools, and data. Implementing OTSS+ allows facilities to track progress, make data-informed decisions, and improve skills over time so they can provide the highest quality of care to their patients.\u202f <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Aligning\u00a0this year’s\u00a0theme\u00a0\u2013 invest, innovate, implement \u2013 PMI Impact Malaria\u00a0remains\u00a0committed to\u00a0supporting\u00a0country leadership, national malaria programs, and health systems through their strategies to achieve their goals of reaching the unreached and ending malaria. As we mark World Malaria Day\u00a02023,\u00a0we applaud the efforts of\u00a0endemic countries and the\u00a0essential\u00a0frontline health workers\u202flike\u00a0Foun\u00e8ba\u202fwho\u00a0will make \u201czero malaria\u201d a reality.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n
