2.4 billion people worldwide lack access to improved sanitation, most of whom live in Southern Asia, Eastern Asia, and Sub-Saharan Africa. In recent years, market-based solutions have been recognized as an effective means of addressing this gap because they aim to grow demand for improved sanitation, while ensuring that a sustainable supply of affordable and appropriately-designed products and services are available to match the demand.
This review, featuring a case study on PSI’s 3SI program in Bihar, India, illustrates the components of market-based approaches to improved sanitation and how they can be used to achieve sustainability and scale.
