The Modern Contraception Use/Need Explorer Tool allows you to see market potential in a country and explore gaps in contraceptive use for different population groups. This kind of segmentation helps plan for scale and target potential users who are being left out of a market.
By applying demographic survey data to population estimates, we can see absolute numbers of those with a need for modern contraception, for example, and can better understand the scale of the potential market. Looking at the use and need numbers by demographic group allows us to identify gaps in equity.

Use: The number of currently married and unmarried sexually active women of reproductive age (15−49 years) using modern contraceptives. Also reported as the percent of women using modern contraceptives within the “need” population.
Need: The total number of currently married or sexually active unmarried women who are fecund and do not want to become pregnant in the next two years. This includes modern method users, traditional method users and women with an unmet need for contraception.
How do we use Use/Need to pinpoint who the market is failing?
PSI employs Use/Need to help programmers see scale and to help marketers frame the question, who is the market failing? Use/Need allows us to see who is being failed by the market by examining subgroups in a population based on multiple lenses: age, marital status, residence, sub-national geography, and wealth.
