Cote d’Ivoire
Country Context
Malaria prevalence is highly variable across the country, from 3% prevalence in Abidjan to over 60% prevalence in the West and Southwest Regions. According to the World Malaria Report 2019, there was an increase in the reported number of confirmed malaria cases from 2016 to 2018 from 3.4 to 4.7 million, and a slight decrease in the number of deaths from 3,340 to 3,133, from 2016 to 2018. Vaccination coverage, as reported by WUENIC1, is moderate at 82% for DTP-3 and 71% for measles dose 1.
PMC MODEL
Through the co-design workshop process, which took place in December 2021, the chosen PMC model includes 5 contacts of SP: the original 3 WHO-recommended contacts for PMC plus RR2 at 15 months and Vitamin A at 18 months. The chosen model will be delivered through health facilities (HF), with the option of leveraging the ‘Strategie Avancée’ for areas more than 5km from a HF. Community health workers, or Agents de Santé Communautaires (ASCs), will play an important role in the sensitization and mobilization of caregivers to increase uptake of PMC. In Cote d’Ivoire, the Project is also placing a strong emphasis on district-level advocacy and community engagement. Through a highly consultative and inclusive, a PMC community engagement strategy has been developed and includes activities working with local leaders and women’s associations to share information about PMC and help encourage caregivers in the project implementation areas to go to health facilities for their routine vaccinations and PMC.
