Medical Abortion Provision by Pharmacies and Drug Sellers in Low- and Middle-Income Countries: A Systematic Review

This review summarises how pharmacies and drug sellers are revolutionising access to safe abortion in low- and middle-income countries. Studies from Africa, Asia and Latin America were reviewed, finding high levels of pharmacy provision of MA. Although medical abortion drugs were commonly provided by pharmacy staff, often without prescriptions, information about how to use the medications effectively is rarely provided. Few studies have evaluated interventions to improve the quality of pharmacy provision of MA, but training, call centre support and detailing may provide avenues to improve pharmacy knowledge about self-management. Interventions that provide information about self-management of MA directly to end-users are needed.
