On September 28, USAID’s Global Development Lab opened Global Innovation Week (GIW) in Washington, D.C. A consortium of global development leaders came together to focus on innovation in the development sector.
During the event’s Evidence and Innovation Day, participating implementing partner organizations, including PSI, pledged to pair a specific smart risk with devoted evidence-based funding.
PSI’s smart risk is Maverick Collective, PSI’s Research and Development Lab, which helps drive innovation in the global health organization’s work around women and girls. Funded by catalytic philanthropists, the initiative tests new models that institutional donors may not be interested in until proven.
Aimed at ending extreme poverty in our lifetime, members of the Collective invest their expertise, time and a minimum of $1 million over three years to pilot an innovative solution for girls and women in the developing world.
PSI’s President & CEO, Karl Hofmann pledged that through PSI’s Maverick Collective initiative we will:
- Test different ways to modernize and strengthen community health systems.
- Use digital technology to both push information to community health workers and gather information from clients to analyze and provide direction on how to serve clients more efficiently and effectively.
- Share our learning as we prototype different service delivery approaches, that both fail and succeed, so that the whole development community can contribute and benefit.
- Engage partners to build an Electronic Medical Record system as an open source platform allowing other partners and players to build on it and benefit from it.
PSI and Maverick Collective believe that solving big problems requires more than money. It takes leaders who are willing to listen with empathy to the people they aim to serve, to fail and learn fast, and to lend their talents and voice to generate impact.
