Our 2021 Impact

For over 50 years, PSI has been striving for a healthier world with the support of partners, donors, and members of the larger global health community. Here are ten milestones we hit in 2021.

1. In 2021 to date, we have reached more than 100 million people in more than 26 countries with information about how to stay safe and prevent COVID-19.

2. We continued to advocate for self-care practices that bring medical care closer to those who most need it. In Uganda, we successfully advocated for a policy to increase access to self-injectable contraceptives, helping women to access sexual and reproductive health services despite COVID-19 lockdown challenges.

3. In India, PSI is stepping up to support the National Health Mission to improve urban health services, strengthening health systems for a growing demographic in a country with strong need for better health services.

4. Smart Start, PSI’s flagship adolescent sexual and reproductive health program in Ethiopia, was named in Fast Company’s 2021 Innovation by Design Awards as a design that made an impact.

5. We continue to tackle barriers to HIV testing and treatment in South Africa. In an area where men are reluctant to seek services, PSI is conducting extensive market research to figure out the best ways to reduce stigma, improve patient experience, and expand access to care.

6. We successfully distributed 13.7 million nets in Madagascar this year, helping children and families prevent malaria — even amidst COVID-19.

7. As part of our commitment to digitize the health experience worldwide, PSI won an app contest for the health platform DHIS2 (District Health Information System). The app helps to ensure data quality assurance, helping to ensure global providers can better care for patients.

8. Our technological transformation expands beyond digital solutions: in Madagascar, PSI used drones to reach remote community health centers with malaria treatment and testing kits, family planning products, and vaccinations. These drones are also bringing back samples from these rural areas for biological testing. Healthcare is literally reaching new heights.

9. Our commitment to equality was recognized by Global Health 50/50, who awarded PSI high scores for our gender equality and diversity and inclusion efforts.

10. Last but not least, we launched our health systems accelerator, a cross-cutting initiative at PSI aimed at investment and research into some of the most innovative areas in global health: digital health, self-care and health financing. We are excited to share more about this initiative in the months to come!
