Kigali, Rwanda, 12th June, 2010: Today the Ministry of Youth launched the second phase of the “SINIGURISHA” (I am not for sale) campaign with a new message: Amagana ba Shuga Dadi na ba Shuga Mami (Take action against Sugar Daddies and Sugar Mommies!).
The SINIGURISHA campaign fights a key driver in HIV infection among youth: cross-generational sex. Cross-generational sex increases the risk for HIV and other sexually transmitted infections, and for unwanted pregnancies — all of which can lead to school drop-out and family conflict. As a result, cross-generational sex causes less productive and less educated youth, putting Rwanda’s future workforce and Rwanda’s bright future at risk.
The target groups of the second phase of the campaign are opinion leaders, including police, teachers, church authorities and business leaders, based on the recommendations of focus group discussions held with youth and adults in Kigali and the 4 provinces in June 2008 that indicated the need for the entire community to join youth in taking action against sugar daddies and sugar mommies. These discussions identified some “permissive” environments in Rwanda that make cross-generational sex “easier”, including:
- Homes: where “trusted” family members or friends target domestic workers or younger family members.
- Schools: where sugar daddies and mommies target students by pretending to be family members to pick up students during breaks or weekends.
- Hotels/Lodges: where sugar daddies and mommies believe they won’t be caught.
- Cars: where sugar daddies and mommies give lifts to boys and girls in need.
Cross-generational sex puts our young people at risk. It needs to be challenged actively and vocally by opinion leaders, who have the power and influence to change the status quo!
What can YOU do??
- Speak openly with your peers and colleagues about the existence of sugar daddies and sugar mommies in Rwanda, and the negative consequences of cross-generational sex for Rwanda’s bright future. These discussions can support sugar daddies and sugar mommies to change their behavior and to stop putting young people at risk. We should all focus on building a strong future for youth in Rwanda!
- Create “protective” environments for young people, by displaying signs and posters against cross-generational sex in public places like bars, restaurants, hotels, lodges, schools and churches. These safe environments will discourage the behaviors of sugar daddies and sugar mommies.
- If necessary, implicate community policing, or call the national police, for support and advice.
The SINIGURISHA campaign was designed by the CNLS under the leadership of the Ministry of Youth, with the financial support of the American people through the President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR) and with technical support from PSI/Rwanda. The campaign phase II will use a multimedia approach that includes billboards, print materials, radio spots, community events, and interpersonal communications.
