We procure manual vacuum aspiration equipment and train providers to provide life-saving abortion-related care with it, including post-abortion care.
Manual vacuum aspiration (MVA) is a World Health Organization-recommended method to treat incomplete abortion and manage early miscarriage (spontaneous abortion). Incomplete and spontaneous abortions require immediate treatment to avoid potentially fatal infections or permanent disability.
MVA is ideal for low-resource settings because it is relatively inexpensive and does not require electricity. It does, however, require specialized clinical training.
We train providers in the use of MVA for safe abortion and post-abortion care in over a dozen countries in Africa, Asia and Latin America. We also train healthcare providers in these countries on the diagnosis and treatment of other complications of unsafe abortion and on post-abortion contraceptive counseling and method provision.
